A proper Digimon RPG has finally made its way to the PC with
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition. Originally released as an exclusive for the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita, it's now available
on Steam and runs great on Linux thanks to Proton.
The game plays out in classical JRPG fashion with lots of dungeon crawling broken up by some decent story exposition. Combat is turn-based but doesn't seem to waste too much time entering and exiting battles so it feels pretty fluid.
Similarly to Pokemon, you begin the game with a choice of 3 different Digimon as your first companion. As you progress, wild Digimon are able to be 'scanned' and gathered so you can form a team of your favourite digital monsters.
Graphic settings in
Digimon Story are a bit bare. Resolution and anti-aliasing settings are the most you're going get and the framerate is locked to 60FPS. However, this doesn't really cause any issues as the game is not particularly demanding and runs on Linux without issue thanks to Proton.
The version of the game released on Steam is actually the
Complete Edition which means it has two games in one: the original game and the
Hacker's Memory sequel. This is basically a slight retelling of the original story from the perspective of another character. And both games should keep you busy for a while.
