Developed by a group of students from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences,
Wild Woods is a prototype couch co-op game with roguelike elements. It also just won the Newcomer Award for student projects at the
Deutscher Entwicklerpreis (German Developer Award) event, this past Wednesday.
The concept of the game is that 1-4 players need to protect their caravan from baddies as it slowly travels through a forest. Gameplay is split into two distinct phases. During daytime, players must collect resources like wood, for burning in a lantern, and berries for health potions. Once nighttime comes, the caravan is assaulted by baddies and players must do their best to defend it.
Defeating enemies drops gold, which can be spent periodically on upgrades. For example, you're able to extend the duration of the lantern at night or to reduce the amount of gold dropped by the caravan when attacked by enemies.
To go along with a small
holiday update, they've also released a Linux build. It's mentioned that the Linux version was untested but I was able to play through it without issue.
