Dating back to the early 2000s,
StepMania is a long-running, open source, rhythm and dance game that draws heavily from Konami's
Dance Dance Revolution series. Development work on the game continues today, albeit in a different form.
Team Rizu, a group of
StepMania community members, are working on Project Moondance in an effort to modernize the game. It was originally envisioned as a complete fork, but has since gained the support of the main project and they are now working towards a
StepMania 5.3 release.
Just 4 days ago, Team Rizu and Project Moondance released the latest
alpha 4.5 build. This new build adds XInput compliance which greatly expands the number and types of input devices that are supported by
StepMania. Additionally, several new gameplay scoring features have been added for chart makers to take advantage of.
Since the
release of Alpha 4.0 last December, the project is moving quite quickly and the team has maintained consistent monthly updates. I can't wait to see how
StepMania evolves going forward.
