True to their word, Double Fine Productions has released the native Linux and macOS versions of Psychonauts 2 on Steam today. This comes 9 months after the initial release date for the game.
Psychonauts 2 was successfully funded on fig more than 6 years ago so it's great to finally be getting a proper Linux release.
Despite Double Fine confirming multiple times that Linux support was coming, I was still expecting the Linux version to be silently cancelled after such a long wait. Doubley-so because the game also runs great with Proton.
Today's announcement was made in a rather to-the-point Steam news post. Not much was said in the post other than to announce the new versions of the game. There are however, a few questionably worded, Ubuntu-specific troubleshooting tips. I'm guessing whoever wrote it was not very familiar with Linux.
In my limited testing, the native version runs quite well; Unreal Engine games typically run fairly smooth on Linux. And it seems to be using Vulkan as well.
As far as 3D platformers go, Psychonauts 2 is a great game filled with totally unique settings and quirky cast of characters. Definitely worth playing if you enjoyed the original or if you enjoy platformers.
