E3 2019 pre-show speculation for Linux games

With the amount of leaks happening in the past few days it almost feels like E3 has already started, even though it doesn't officially begin until Tuesday, June 11th. I wanted to take a look at what might be revealed and talked about this year for Linux gamers.


Campo Santo, developers of Firewatch, announced their new title In The Valley of Gods at The Game Awards in late 2017. Since then they've been acquired by Valve so it's likely that it will be coming to Linux when released. Hopefully we'll get a new look at the game and a possible release date announcement for this year.

Tim Schafer will also be at E3 this year, joined by Jack Black. The pair will be hosting a short conference to show off Psychonauts 2 gameplay. After more than 3 years since it was successfully crowdfunded, we will see a live-action demo of the sequel in action. A Linux release was part of the original Psychonauts 2 crowdfunding campaign so I hope that nothing has changed since then. Tune into the official E3 Coliseum stream on June 12th at 6pm for this one.


Croteam (The Talos Principle and Serious Sam) were doing some teasing on Twitter recently. This could mean a potential announcement for a sequel to The Talos Principle this year. I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Croteam has traditionally been a supporter of Linux and Vulkan so another Linux release looks fairly certain. Tune into Devolver Digital's press conference on June 9th at 7pm PST for any potential news from them.

During the PC Gaming Show, June 10th 10am PST, there is also the potential for some interesting announcements. Chucklefish, the publishers of Stardew Valley and Starbound are said to be announcing a new title. Most of Chucklefish's games are available on Linux so there's a good chance that anything new from them will also be coming to Linux.


Paradox Interactive will also be making an appearance during the PC Gaming Show, most likely to present new information on Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, which unfortunately hasn't been confirmed as a Linux release. I am staying optimistic though. However, the spinoff single-player adventure game Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York (from Draw Distance), has been confirmed as a Linux release.

Even with all the early leaks this year, E3 should have a few surprises in store. And let me know in the comments if I missed anything.
